Can You Prevent Termite Damage In Victoria?
The best way to prevent any kind of pest damage to homes in Victoria is with regular (annual) pest inspections. There are, however, a number of preventative measures that you can take around your home to help protect your investment.
Springtime is coming
Because termites are active in spring, now is the best time to perform a check of your home, one of the most simple but effective ways of preventing termite damage. We don’t mean check for termites either. They are almost impossible to detect with the naked eye and should always be identified using thermal imaging. (Thermal detection provides proof. Ask to be shown the data before you decide on which action to take and remember, you should always be offered options.)
Look for potential water hazards
Termites are attracted to moisture. They require it to thrive. Make sure the external wet areas of your home are well contained. Fixing a leaking tap will do more than just reduce your water consumption. It could potentially save you a lot of money if termites take a liking to your home because of its moisture content. The best way to prevent moisture from escaping is to have functioning plumbing and preventative splash backs.
Check any pipes and AC units for leaks. If you are able to in a safe manner, climb a ladder and inspect your roofing and gutters for any rotted material. (Now’s a good time to clean out all those fallen Autumn leaves from gutters, too.)
Is there a 50cm gap?
If any timber portions of your home are at ground level, aim to maintain a uniform 50cm gap between soil beds and that part of the home. Keep an eye on this as in the right conditions plants can quickly grow and provide a bridge over the termite barrier.
Check the condition of the wood
Again, you’re not so much looking for evidence of termites here. If they were visible you could potentially be in a lot of trouble. It’s more to monitor your wood for any changes. Look for uneven or bubbling paint, and wood that sounds hollow when you tap it with your fingers. Look at the wood frames – doors, windows and skirting boards – for noticeable changes.
Do these things annually
A BMC pest inspection includes a thorough check of your home and the surrounding area. Time your annual preventative check for 6 months later and, if you do see anything suspicious, always give us a call.
If we do find an infestation now, or in the future, we can contain it and do any building work required to make your home strong and termite free again.
